The Location

Dhoon Glen is about 9 miles north of Douglas and 6 miles south of Ramsey.

What's there

A steep path down though woods by a stream to the beach. About half way down, the stream plummets over a steep waterfall. Not disabled friendly, as the walk has rugged paths, steep inclines and is often wet. There is a cafe at the start of the walk, which is open during the tourist season.

How to get there

Postcode for Satnav - IM7 1HP which is for Dhoon Farm, just north of Dhoon Halt.
From Douglas, take the A2 north towards Laxey, drive through Laxey. About a mile past Laxey, the road runs under a cliff, with gorgeous views out to sea on the right. It then turns left and goes downhill to Dhoon Halt. Here you will find the car park on your left.
From Ramsey, Take the A2 south past the co-op, and follow this road through Ballure and Glen Mona. About a mile past Glen Mona, the road descends down to Dhoon Halt, where you will see the car park on your right.

Cross over the A2 road, and then over the tram tracks. Dhoon Halt is the name of the tram stop. Bear right and down some steps behind the cafe, over the picnic area, then along wooden walkways, and sometimes just a rough path with the stream on the left Now the pathway dives under the Dhoon loop road through a tunnel, then past a field on the other side. Now we climb up through some beech woods, and past a ruined waterwheel.
About half way down the glen, you will find steps dropping down the hill and past a waterfall.

The stream rushes on down valley and finally drops down to a high twin waterfall at bottom, called Inneen Vooar or Big Girl. The path now runs along the valley bottom, over wooden bridges and walkways, until you reach a narrow cut with views to the sea. The beach here is rocky and pebbly, but you will see spectactular cliffs to the north.
Now you have a choice, you can turn right down the beach a bit, where you will find a path leading up the cliffs. This rejoins the other path near to the Dhoon road. Otherwise you can just retrace your steps back by the waterfall. Either way, you will enjoy a steep climb back! Glen Dhoon is considered to be the steepest Glen on the Island.

History

Back in the 19th century there was a lead mine close to the glen. If you take a close look at the big stone wall and chimney that you pass on the way to the waterfall, you will see it is a narrow, double wall. It once housed a waterwheel, which was used to drain the mine.
According to local legend, a young girl drowned in the pool under the waterfall and her ghost haunts the pool today.
